White Rock Elks raise $15K for BC Feed the Kids Foundation

Oct. 5, 2025

Plenty of people partied for a cause with the White Rock Elks (#431) last Saturday, with proceeds going to help feed the community’s children.

The fundraiser, held at the Elks Hall Saturday, Sept. 27, raised $15,000 for BC Feed the Kids, a White Rock-based charity that is tackling food security head-on, Elks’ charity and fundraising committee member Bob O’Keefe noted in an email.

“It was a tremendous success. We’re thrilled to share that 100 per cent of the proceeds went directly to support the foundation’s vital work,” O’Keefe said.

BC Feed the Kids, after recognizing that hungry children are a reality in every B.C. community, the foundation is now filling the food gap through meaningful and impactful programs that provide breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks to students in several local schools throughout White Rock and Surrey, as well as throughout the province. The event could not have been successful without the support of Elks’ local sponsors and many Elks volunteers, O’Keefe added.

Band returns with Elks Club show on Culture Crawl weekend

A different musical flavour will be part of the White Rock and South Surrey Culture Crawl weekend.

One of the Semiahmoo Peninsula’s most popular musical attractions, Alexander Browne and his Boulevardiers, returns Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the White Rock Elks Club Hall, 1469 George St.

The evening will feature Maestro Browne’s signature style of authentic music from the ‘Jazzy 1920s’ and ‘Flirty 1930s’ “for your dancing and listening pleasure.”

“While we’re not part of the official line-up of Culture Crawl events during the day, we’re very happy to be playing on a weekend that showcases the vibrant arts and culture scene on the Peninsula,” said Browne (also well-known in the community as a longtime reporter for the Peace Arch News).

The dance will take place in the main ground floor auditorium of the White Rock Elks Club.

“We found our previous venue getting a little too snug for us, and the hall provides extra room for dancing and for those people who arrive to purchase tickets at the door,” Browne said.

There will be a full-service cash bar and, while not mandatory, part of the fun of the event is the opportunity to dress 1920s and 1930s-style, he added.

“It’s definitely a chance to get out those dapper duds and flapper dresses.”

The band’s “charming chanteuse,” Alison Lumley, will be on hand to sing her torch numbers and peppy novelties, while Browne will feature his vocals and occasional “whispering” trumpet solos.

White Rock Elks second vice-president Judi Hrynenko, who had her own stall selling antipasto and other offerings at the market, noted that proceeds from hosting the market go toward the many charities the Elks support.

The Winter Fantasy Market happens again this Sunday, Dec. 8, starting at 10 a.m. at the Elks Hall, 1469 George Street.
